One woman whose life would undeniably improve if her husband were gone is Pat Simms. She and Captain Novotny have been growing closer, and when the two secretly meet for a picnic he reveals his attraction to her, perspicaciously having inferred her unhappiness with her husband. Unfortunately, that husband has resurfaced, albeit in the hospital, having been injured by a stray artillery shell. - The attraction between Pat and Marek continues to grow, but the risk of acting on their feelings is huge. At the reading of his will, Frances discovers that Peter was keeping a secret from her.

Pat is tempted by her feelings for Marek while Bob is in hospital. Steph is delighted when Stan returns home on leave, but the reunion is overshadowed by his fears of invasion. Frances discovers a secret at the reading of the will. Steph fins it hard to deal with the work required during harvest time. Sarah ends up in a dangerous situation, whilst Teresa has a huge decision to make. A newcomer to the village causes friction between Sarah and Frances.
Cookie is kind and worries for the WI when it becomes corrupt and selfish under Joyce's rule. However, she shows a lot of happiness when Frances takes over and happily supports the newly reformed WI's movements. A drama set in a rural British village just prior to and during World War II.

She makes every effort to keep him happy, but remains with him out of fear, lying about and making apologies for his behavior. Spencer takes a fancy to Claire after coming to her rescue in a bicycling accident. Joyce is a pillar of the community, and the historical leader of the Great Paxford Women's Institute. Joyce is sophisticated and serene, and even her ex-nemesis Frances observes that she is a natural leader.
Pat strikes up a friendship with a Czech soldier stationed nearby. He is brave and wants to enlist in the war, despite having unpleasant memories of the last conflict in which he served. Stanley loves his wife and son and works hard to provide for them.
He begins hiding loaded guns around the property, can’t sleep for fear of bombing, and trains Stanley Jr. to defend the farm. His militant attitude frightens Steph, who fears that Stan is cultivating brutality and a dangerous dread in their son. Staying sane and level-headed is difficult when the pressure is palpable. To the consternation of much of the Institute, she becomes president once again, although Sarah emphasizes that it’s only short-term.
In the face of Marek’s impending departure, Pat has a big decision to make, but Bob has one last trick up his sleeve to thwart her plans. While Frances fights to clear her name after the closure of the factory, Alison continues to wrestle with her conscience. Meanwhile, a chance encounter with Noah on the street leads Joyce to do some investigating of her own.
