Series creator Simon Block is writing four novels to continue telling the story of the women of Great Paxford as they live through World War II on the home front. Steph is concerned by Stan’s behavior on the farm. The Brindsleys make a disturbing discovery, and there’s joyful news in the Campbell house. In the final episode of the first series, Bob leaves for London, leaving Pat relieved and happy to be away from him, whilst Joyce leaves for the coast. She speaks with Frances over the war effort and hands over the keys to her tennis courts so that they may be used for food production. As the series finishes the final scene hints at the war taking its toll in Great Paxford. Dr Campbell finds he has lung cancer, preventing him from enlisting.

Pat and Marek are reconciled, but when someone sees them together, their relationship is in more danger than ever. The Brindsleys come to realise the full extent of David's injuries becomes apparent, and Teresa faces letting go of the past when she is asked out. Alison fears the consequences of her involvement with the Lyons, Laura is spurred into action by some happy news, and Joyce and Erica work together on a first aid meeting.
When David discovers what she has done, he enlists in the Navy anyway. Shortly thereafter the Navy delivers an official letter which Miriam hides in a panic, assuming it is a notice of his death. She cannot face opening the letter and having her fears turn into immutable reality. However, when Bryn finds the hidden and unopened letter, it turns out they are reporting that he is only missing in action. Grasping at straws, Miriam sees this as actually hopeful as it means the Navy is not sure of his death and that he may still be alive, though lost.

At a dance organized by the Czech soldiers, Joyce gives Sarah some unwelcome advice, and the stakes are raised for Pat when someone discovers her relationship with Marek.
It's harvest time, and Steph struggles with the work required, but time is running out to meet the quota required, and she risks losing the farm. The suspicion of an affair is confirmed when Frances receives the possessions her husband was carrying upon his death and finds a necklace and card meant for Helen. The relationship between Pat and Marek continues to deepen, but not without risk. As Frances tries to come to terms with her husband's death, she learns a shocking secret about him. Teresa realizes that neither Steph nor her son can read and is in danger of losing the farm because, since she can't read them, she is not complying with government regulations about wartime farming. She teaches Steph to read in order to save the family farm from confiscation due to noncompliance with government farming regulations.
